Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the oldest of the three daughters of Lithuanian Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. After her father died as a Carnival barker as a young girl She was required to keep the family going by working as a cleaner and a server. Ruth went to school in Boston's tenement region, which was the most deplorable. After only two school years the young woman left to pursue an acting career. Her journey was not without obstacles. her chosen career path. Then, in New York she was hired to take photos in a crime magazine, but no theatrical job opportunities came up. Then, after a stint as a club hat girl, she decided to return home to the United States and quit her position. She was an usherette in the mornings and was a part of the New England Repertory Company by night, which was her first ever permanent acting job. Her studies in drama led her to receive a degree from Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
